Archive for December 2007

By the way

Christmas was some good times.  I woke up, opened some sweet gifts, then went to see the greatest movie of our generation– National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.

I’m getting kind of excited for awards season this year, because I think unlike last year it’s anyone’s game for the majority of the awards.  This year doesn’t have a Jennifer Hudson or a Helen Mirren.  And the nominations are already surprising me.  For example… Atonement received no SAG nominations.  Neither did Charlie Wilson’s War, but that movie is a Golden Glober and nothing more.  I can say that with confidence without even seeing it in the theater, though it might be prudent that I do within the next few days.  Oh 2007, what lofty goals!

100 Movies in 2007: Rapid Fire 3

  1. 3:10 to Yuma
Good… for a Western.  I have to admit I was bored a few times.
  2. Becoming Jane
I like James McAvoy… but he’s too short to be a leading man.  He’s almost tall enough for Anne Hathaway, but I wonder how they are going to make him look un-short next to Keira Knightley.
  3. December Boys
Cute little movie.  Harry Potter was in it.  Good times.
  4. Michael Clayton
Really effing good.  Impressed with Tom Wilkinson.  The last scene/credits were interesting.
  5. Brick
Really effing cool.  But I wish they would stop casting Laynie Hart in things.  I could have done without her in this and last season of Heroes.
  6. Gods and Monsters
I want to use the phrase “oddly compelling,” but it’s only halfway there.  I saw this because I still think there’s a chance for Brendan Frasier to become a serious actor.  I felt the Hollywood stuff was a tad too self-important.
  7. Lars and the Real Girl
    You should see this.
  8. Jane Eyre
Toby Stephens and I have the same hair.  But I think he was wearing a wig.
  9. August Rush
Disappointing.  I wanted it to be great.
  10. Just Friends
Fairly entertaining.  And Anna Faris was as she should always be– disposable.
  11. The Quiet American
I saw this movie for the same reason I saw Gods and Monsters.  This movie was better, and I want to read the novel now.
  12. Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?
Russ Carnahan = evil!  Moving in a small-time politics way.
  13. Joyeux Noel
Well done.  I was confused which sides were which at the beginning, but mostly because everyone was speaking in a foreign language.
  14. 300
Visually interesting.  Other than that I didn’t love it.
  15. I am Legend
Solid.  I hear the ending is different than the book, but I thought it was more appropriate for the movie.
  16. House of Sand and Fog
Ron Eldard is more familiar than his filmography lends him to be.  The ending was not what I was expecting, but I thought the storyline was different and good.

Overdressed

I went the movies with my friend Kalista tonight.  Kalista is one of those people who is always more dressed up than everyone else.  So tonight I tried to match her.  I brought my A-game.  I wore heels!  Ahhhh!  And later, ouchhhhhh!  So I’ve got heels on, my hair looks pretty nice, I wore a sweater and my peacoat.  You know what’s up.

I go to pick her up and she walks out of her house in a hoodie and flats.  I give up!  I knew there was a reason I rarely dressed up.  I’ve learned my lesson.  Sneakers and jeans and hoodies until I graduate college.  The end.

I’m Emma, remember me?

People forget me a lot.  This irritates me, and not just because I think I am just so gosh darn unforgettable.  It’s because I remember them.  Here are two recent examples:

1.  Jeff.  Jeff is my friend Amelia’s friend.  They are in the nursing program together.  I have met Jeff a few times.  He’s originally from Massachusetts, and we have had conversations about this.  Amelia mentioned me the other day and Jeff was like “who?”

2.  Shawn.  I worked with Shawn at Starbucks back in my freshman year of college.  He’s originally from New York, so we’ve had more than one conversation regarding Dunkin Donuts.  I even remember him trying to get me to give him my part of the tip money so he could buy gas.  He was in a fraternity, was majoring in agricultural business (I believe).  He left his job at Starbucks because he found a better one doing something financial that related to his major.  To this day Shawn is “infatuated” with my roommate Margaret, whom I also met working at Starbucks.  She tried to explain to him who I was one time on instant messenger.  He had no clue.

Seriously… am I that forgettable?  I mean, just look at all the stuff I remembered about Shawn.  It’s almost acceptable for Jeff not to remember who I am… but Shawn?  Are you kidding me?

Or maybe I just have a mind like a steel trap.

TV boyfriend

Occasionally my mind will wander to the subject of why I have never had a boyfriend. I try to tell myself not worry. It’ll happen when it happens. But why hasn’t it happened? I think sometimes it may have something to do with my numerous and wonderful TV boyfriends.

Yes, I will never land a guy as good-looking as Dean Winchester. I will never find a guy who is as adorably stupid as Bright Abbott. But does that mean I should lower my standards? Nah. Because at the end of the day I still want the guy who will buy me a wall.
